Framework for Evaluating Product Strategy

There are many different approaches to evaluating products or strategic questions in the world of product. I find this one to be fairly comprehensive for product mangers, even though it was designed originally for researchers. A framework from the 1970s: The Heilmeier Catechism might be helpful for you.

George H. Heilmeier, of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) crafted a set of questions in the 70s known as the "Heilmeier Catechism'' to help evaluate research programs. You can leverage most of them to also evaluate Product Managers

Over 50 years later, these questions can still be used to create better products. They are also a nice basis for thinking about product strategy - at work or during an interview.

  1. What are you trying to do? Articulate your objectives using absolutely no jargon.

  2. How is it done today, and what are the limits of current practice?

  3. What is new in your approach and why do you think it will be successful?

  4. Who cares? If you are successful, what difference will it make?

  5. What are the risks?

  6. How much will it cost?

  7. How long will it take?

  8. What are the mid-term and final “exams” to check for success?

Sharing in the hopes that it helps you think through problems at work or during a case more effectively.
