Team Coaching

Are you looking to provide your team or individual members of your team with support? Do you want all individualized coaching? Or would you like group coaching? A combination?

Below, I map out some coaching/education options for product teams. The first section maps out program options for both private and group coaching. The second section illustrates some common coaching programs/themes. We can also start with an open-ended approach and then focus on themes.

Note: Coaching vs. Education. Formally trained coaches are taught to drive self-discovery with questions and provide very little advice, so when I talk about coaching vs. education, I am talking about leading self-discovery vs. providing more specific instructions (more like a sports coach teaching practical skills and drills). More junior PMs typically require a deeper focus on education. In contrast, more senior PMs and leaders typically seek a more balanced combination of guided self-discovery with practical advice and tools.

Coaching Focus Areas

Executive Coaching is based on goals with the flexibility to pivot if that is what the client wants and needs. But we can also have a pre-determined theme and mix traditional career coaching with more direct instruction.

Examples of PM Focus Area

  • Custom: Executive Coaching

    • Typically includes driving self-discovery on the topics of Communication, Data-Driving Development, Execution, Prioritization, Strategy, People Leadership, Cross-Functional Communication, etc.

  • New PM Focus

    • Includes focus on fundamentals, including communications, metrics, and healthy execution focus.

  • First 100 Days

    • For new and experienced PMs, a guided approach to starting a new role on the right foot.

  • Communications Focus

    • 80% of what PMs do is communication; most PMs need help navigating communication stumbles

  • Execution Focus

    • If a PM needs more help with execution, we can pivot to an education/coaching relationship where I mix instruction on execution concepts with coaching to aid the self-discovery process on execution decisions.

  • Strategy Focus

    • Much like the execution focus, we can move more into an education/coaching relationship wher I mix instruction and feedback on strategic decisions.

  • Data-Driven Decision-Making

    • If the PM struggles to work with data, there are a number of tools plus coaching on using data more effectively for decision-making, helping the PM switch to a goal-oriented, data-driven mindset.

  • Product Leadership

    • Settings strategy, managing up, managing down, and cross-functional communication are common themes. Variations depend on the individual and the organization.
