Toastmasters: Improve Vocal Confidence
Many of my clients struggle with getting nervous speaking during interviews. Toastmasters can be a great way to practice in a very friendly environment.
What is Toastmasters?
Basically, a public speaking club where people both hold one another accountable and help one another improve. Learn more at their website.
Top 5 Toastmaster Benefits for PM Interviewing
The following elements of a typical Toastmaster’s meeting will help you be successful as a PM and a PM candidate. They are listed in what I think is most important for interview prep. (For daily PM work, I might argue the longer speeches tie with Table Topics in importance for skill building.)
Table Topics - Short 2-minute impromptu speeches that help PMs practice speaking when caught off guard
Ah & Um Counter - Because someone counts your Ahs & Ums, it helps you become self-aware after just one meeting.
The Grammarian - Someone pointing out awkward use of language by anyone in the group helps everyone
Longer Speeches - You learn proper structure and presentation of ideas. Your fellow Toastmasters will give feedback on everything from structure to noisy backgrounds and everything in between.
Timer - Having to present in a particular time frame week after week makes you more skilled in concise communication, a must for PM interviews and day-to-day work.
There are a number of other benefits to Toastmasters for PM candidates, but that is my list of top 5.
