Zoom Interviews: Whiteboard Errors

Please, please, please remember that when you use a Google Doc or other electronic whiteboard solutions during a Product Case interview, you are using it as a whiteboard, NOT making the interviewer listen to you type out a complete document.

Do NOT:

  • Don’t type out long sentences

  • Don’t make the interviewer read long sentences

  • Don’t read it back to them word-for-word

  • Don’t type partial information (think some metrics but not all)

  • Don’t forget it is meant to replicate a whiteboard

Do:

  • Use it as you would a regular whiteboard: Headline Concepts, Rules of Three, etc.

  • Only write in it what you would on a whiteboard ‘onsite’

  • Consistent: If you are typing out key concepts, keep it up.

The Problem

Too many candidates are writing documents in real-time and losing their interviewers, and coming across as more junior.

Put yourself in the Interviewer’s Shoes
Imagine you were the interviewer; how would you feel watching someone type in their answer to an interview that should be an interactive discussion?
