Google Pricing Prompts

The following are crowdsourced prompts on pricing from Google.  Most of the examples are standalone prompts, but you could just as easily have a pricing question tacked on to the end of a Strategy, Craft & Execution or even a design question. Prepare for both standalone and (what I call) compound questions with a pricing twist.

You will see a combination of different twists:

  • Describe a pricing model.

  • How would you price _______? (Product, Service, Membership, etc.)

  • How would you determine a price? (Might not require actual price.)

  • What factors impact different prices for same product?

  • What analysis would you do to determine a price change is needed?

  • Should X consider Y pricing model?

  • Design a X pricing model for Y product.

Clarifying Question

Don’t forget to ask clarifying questions like:

  • Do you just want my approach, or do you want an actual proposed price?

  • This is how I would describe a freemium model. Is that your understanding, or did I miss something?

Standalone

  • Describe a product or service you think takes an interesting approach to pricing.

  • You are launching a new music service where you pay per time you play a song. After a certain number of plays, it automatically purchases the song. How would you price this service?

  • Imagine United Airlines has decided to launch a new “standby membership pass,” which allows members to take unlimited free flights on standby (only boarding if there are empty seats). How would you price this membership?

  • A textbook publishing company has decided to sell subscriptions to electronic versions of any of its books. How would you determine the price of this service?

  • How would you price a file backup service targeted at enterprise customers?

  • Two stores are located just a mile away from each other. They sell the same product, but one sells the product for 25% more than the other. What factors could explain why the prices are different?

  • How would you price a cell phone service for the elderly?

  • You are launching a photo printing service that automatically prints and mails someone’s favorite pictures to them. How would you price this service?

  • Imagine you are launching a to-do list manager for smartphones. How would you determine the pricing of this application?

  • What analysis would you go through to determine if/when Amazon should change the price of Amazon Prime?

  • How would you price a brand new Kindle book?

  • How would you design Lyft dynamic pricing?

  • You are in charge of pricing for an immersive AR/VR experience type offering. How would you price it?

  • Imagine you work for a traditional taxi service in a major US city. It has a flat pricing per mile, with extra fee for idling and flat transfer pricing for tolls. How would you improve this model?

  • Design a surge pricing model as if you were a PM at Uber or Lyft

  • You work for a bike share company, should they consider a freemium model?

  • Should Amazon increase the price of Prime Membership? If so, estimate the revenue generated or lost.

Compound

  • Google Cloud wants to provide Google Translation as an API. What do you think about it? What are the pros and cons of the proposal? Estimate the market share of Google Translator as an API. How would you price it?

  • Remember that Teleportation Design question…. You are a PM at a startup which is designing a Teleportation device. How will you go about designing it? Follow-ups included: Pricing, Supply-Chain and Marketing Strategy questions.
