Application Tracking: Huntr

This week, I resumed testing job search products and saving jobs.

I started where I left off with the TealHQ plugin and quickly discovered scrapers create new URLs and TealHQ couldn’t tell the difference - I was getting a lot of noise in my dashboard with duplicate and triplicate job descriptions.

While TealHQ seems properly focused on their goal to help you create custom resumes for each role, Huntr does the same plus, they have taken care of the little things that make the job search painful: autofill and better visualization of your open job applications.

I considered returning to my old school Google Spreadsheet format, but I figured with all the new products out there today, there might be something that would give me more than the spreadsheet. What I found: Huntr (huntr.co NOT hunter.com)

Why I want to try it:

  • Plugin to Save Job Descriptions as I find them

  • Autofil for applications (I am sick of having to manually find my LinkedIn URL for every job application)

  • Kanban-type board to follow progress

  • Resume writing AI, if I want it.

  • Resume builder let’s me have control of the intro/about me

Reasons I like so far:

  • Kanban board beats spreadsheet for keeping track of actions.

  • Easier to basically create a wish list than with a spreadsheet

  • Gives me (what is now) standard keyword analysis of resume vs. job description

Reasons I don’t love it

  • Too many extra fields I can’t figure out. Flexiblity means greater complexity.

  • Job Tailored Resume requires me to do a lot fo manual work, or I just can’t figure it out. I can’t seem to find a way to link the resume and the JD.

  • AI summary is horrible (and lacks wordcount check that TealHQ has). See below.

Wish List

  • API to read emails to change status

  • Or a good Zap to update status based on email (mostly rejections as that is most common)

  • Easier linking of job description to custom resume

I believe in the next year or two, most of us will be using one of the resume and job search tools every time we search for a job. As AI improves, so with their ability to help us improve our resume. For now, it is helping me self-reflect and figure out how I want to improve/change my resume to be more attractive to hiring teams.

. . .

If you want to see how AI failed me, look at what it did to my summary section a the top of my resume:

Professional Experience

You can compare and contrast the summary section of my resume, the first was penned by a professional writer, the second by AI. They aren’t even in the same ballpark.
