Do’s and Don’ts of Metrics Creation

For execution case questions, you need to measure your product. Most people get it wrong. Here is a quick list of some Do’s and Don’ts.

Don’t

  • Give a vague description (i.e. I would measure what happens in the product)

  • Use Percentages for North Stars

  • Over complicated your metric

  • Use CSAT or other qualitative metric unless aboslutely necessary

Do:

  • Include a count (think # of X)

  • Avoid averages unless absolutely necessary

  • Be specific (total queries is better than overall volume — I need to know how you measure volume)

  • Keep it simple. If the metric is getting complicated, consider a proxy metric.
