KPI Trees Drills for Execution

While I tried unsuccessfully to use KPI trees to drive a metrics-driven culture at some of the companies I worked at in the past, this quick guide to KPI trees has me thinking it was about my delivery. I think Andrew Miller has concisely explained how to leverage KPI trees. I believe they are a GREAT drill for people who are preparing for PM Execution interviews.

Andrew Miller shared a really useful framework for analyzing your metrics called KPI Trees. Here's how it works.

  1. Pick a high level business metric to be your lagging indicator—ie “new paid accounts per month”

  2. Break the business metric down into 2-3 leading indicators

  3. Break those leading indicators down into 2-3 leading indicators

  4. Repeat until you surface a few leading indicators that your team can directly influence
