Homework: Think at Scale
Ravi Mehta does an excellent job of explaining the Facebook interview process here.
Follow Ravi at: his website, Twitter and LinkedIn. I highly recommend that you subscribe to his newsletter (upper right hand side of his website).
Below, I have summarized his most important points that all those interviewing for Meta/Facebook need to incorporate into their interview approach across all interview sessions:
Think at Scale
Facebook looks for PMs that think at scale (billions not thousands of users).
Don’t serve a niche but create products at scale to reach those niches. (i.e. Facebook Groups)
As you answer interview questions, think to yourself: “Am I solving a big enough problem?”
Facebook looks for people who dive into the weeds. Yes, they want people who gravitate to big problems — but they also want people who can get granular.
What specifically are you solving for?
How do you break the big idea into small, iterative, testable pieces?
Facebook looks for people who use and love Facebook products.
Facebook expects that you’ve already started to think about how to make Facebook better.
Most (not all) questions during the product interview will be related to Facebook products in some way.
Spend some time before the interview familiarizing yourself with key features and recent developments.
Your Homework
Complete a few Meta/Facebook prompts keeping at least 3 of these ideas in mind. Do you find your solutions are scalable to at leat 500 million or 1 billion people?
