I was listening to a friend mock I had a sudden aha moment, if I wrote out her thought process, I was listening to her build a decision tree, and just following one of 2 or 3 branches each time.
I then developed a framework that puts the problem at the top and then just keeps diving it. On paper, the outline looks like this:
