Decision Trees for Design Interviews

The product design or product design interviews require using a framework. Some of the most common problems we encounter are:

  • Not Narrowing Soon Enough

    • Not selecting the best narrowing

  • Selecting Users or Use Cases

    • Prioritizing Users

  • Listing Pain Points/Problems

    • Prioritizing Pain Points

  • Solutions

    • Prioritizing Solutions

I was listening to a friend mock I had a sudden aha moment, if I wrote out her thought process, I was listening to her build a decision tree, and just following one of 2 or 3 branches each time.

I then developed a framework that puts the problem at the top and then just keeps diving it. On paper, the outline looks like this:
