Craft & Execution: Deciding to Sunset a Product

We are starting to see hypothetical question in Craft & Execution.

For Example:

  • How do you decide to sunset a product.

For this question, the best approach is to think about situations in which you would sunset a product. Then talk about how you would decide..

There are typically three cases where we would sunset a product:

  • Technology: Newer Solution Superceeds

  • Lost Product-Market Fit: people are not using it/not finding product marketfit

    • fewer users

    • not profitable

  • Mission/Goal: Company goal and mission changed

How to Decide

I would ask the following questions.

  • Has user growth stagnated or fallen?

  • Has the market size for the product gotten smaller?

  • Do users still need the product?

  • Have users moved to another product?

  • Does it still align with our mission and goals?

  • Is it too expensive to support/not profitable?

  • Do we have a better solution and need to move people to it.

  • Are the people who remain on the product core users or vocal smaller user group? When was the last time the product was used by the core users?
