day 7
prompt type | product analytics
When is it a good idea to use MAU as the North Star metric? When is it only a vanity metric?
why | critical thinking
Too many people jump to DAU or MAUs for north start metrics, it is often, but not always, a vanity metric. If you can answer this question intelligently, you are half way there when it comes to evaluating the metrics you want to propose for exeuction/analytics interviews.
hint | think about the stage of a product
Think about when you were last obsessed with DAUs on your product?
example | from internal product
If you can think about a boring internal product, think your experimentation platform. When do you think they switch from WAUs to # experiments created? Or vice versa.
When I owned Yelp’s experimentation platform, I got the team fired up about measuring success by setting a goal of just 3 experiments run. As we tried to get the entire company to use it, we started looking at Weekly Active Users and Weekly Active Teams.
