day 13
type | behavioral
prompt: Tell me about a time you failed to convince someone of something.
why | this will cause you to freeze
This is a specific type of failure. You are going to have to acknowledge a communication failure. You will need to be humble, but also reflect on what you could have done differently. Or better yet, you will have to show how you succeeded the next time it happened.
hint | come up with multiple stories
Think about where you struggle most with storytelling and getting buy-in.
You can probably find something with your manager or an executive who had their mind made up, and nothing you said would work. You will still need to be humble and say the problem was yours, but you likley have a long list of these situations to pull from.
TL;DR - I failed to understand what motivated them and how to present the message in a language that resonated with them, works well, even when the truth is: They were strong-willed and everyone on the team struggled to get him to see his ask wasn’t possible, not viable, nor good for the end users. Get your frustration out now, not in front of your interviewer.
